How easy it is to say "The righteous of Babi Yar". Undoubtedly, we pronounce their names with respect and reverence. But what do these words mean for a modern man? Even though today may be difficult, but we still are not afraid to go to the store, the synagogue or a theater. We are not afraid to lose life just because someone does not like our eye color or curly hair. We don't live in the constant fear, do not hide and do not help others to hide. And it is even difficult to imagine that it might be otherwise. And if it was? Who would have become for us the people who risk their own families, the lives of their children for the sake of our salvation? And what about each of us – would we be able to risk our life for absolutely unfamiliar children and adults?

However, during the Second World War there were people who risked. After all, for salvation of one Jew they could destroy your whole family, whatever nationality it was: Ukrainians, Russians, Polanders, Belarusians – it was not important. Our compatriots made an incredibly difficult choice every day and decided to help, to protect, to save. Every life saved is the story of struggle, bravery and courage shown by people in inhuman conditions. For us living today, it is important to remember this deed.

Every year in the column hall of the KSCA is held the honoring of the Righteous of Babi Yar. Each year the ICF "Jewish Hesed "Bnei Azriel" is a permanent co-organizer of this event. So recently the Righteous and the Jews saved by them met again together to honor the memory of those who were not destined to survive until our days and to pray for the health and longevity of the living ones. Lighting a candle, representatives of the Kiev Hesed has acceded to the universal prayer for the health and longevity of the Righteous of Babi Yar, and all present, which was read by the chief Rabbi of Ukraine Moshe Asman. It is very important that the meeting with the Righteous of Babi Yar was attended by the ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions of foreign States in Ukraine, public figures and representatives of the Jewish community. Of course, that meeting is important not only as a memory of the deeds committed by the Righteous people, but also as a life lesson for the present and future generations: the Supreme value is a human life.
