• Kyiv Hesed: 27 years of charitable assistance, trust and care

October 1 - International Day of the Elderly.

First, the Day of the Elderly began to be celebrated in Europe, then in America, and at the end of the 1990s already all over the world. The Day of the Elderly is celebrated on a grand scale in the Scandinavian countries. On this day, television and radio programs are broadcast with the tastes of the elderly in mind. An elderly person is someone who has reached the age of 65. By 2050, the number of such people in many developed countries will double (the so-called process of aging nations), and the total number in the world will be 2 billion people.

According to the UN, the need to actively use the productive and creative potential of older people is very important. Society should simultaneously help overcome the psychological limit of old age and reduce the burden of social costs on young people at the expense of working pensioners.

Ukraine, as a full member of the UN, supported the initiative of the international community and has been celebrating this day every year since 1991. The decision on the annual observance of the International Day of Senior Citizens in Ukraine and the creation of appropriate social protection conditions for pensioners, people with disabilities, and single citizens unable to work was approved by Government Resolution No. 1066 dated September 26, 1997 "On the Annual Celebration of the International Day of Senior Citizens". In accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated September 24, 2004 No. 1135/2004, Ukraine also celebrates Veteran's Day on October 1.

For the 28th year, the "Jewish Chesed "Bnei Azriel" Foundation has been taking care of socially vulnerable elderly people - members of the Jewish community, members of their families, including non-Jews, the Righteous of the World, and people with disabilities. Today, we help more than 6,000 wards , who live in Kyiv, Kyiv region, Zhytomyr and Zhytomyr region.

Our help is comprehensive. About 30% of the wards are people who use wheelchairs or are bedridden. Such people need daily care, and in some cases 24/7 assistance. Therefore, within the framework of the "Home Care", SOS and "Rehabilitation Equipment" charity programs, we provide unprecedented assistance: sanitary hygiene materials, rehabilitation equipment, wheelchairs, anti-bedsore mattresses, caps for washing the head, a lot of equipment that improves the quality of life, partial payment of prosthetics operations, including ophthalmic operations, chemotherapy for cancer patients, support for people with diabetes and much more. But, most importantly, we provide charitable assistance with professional patronage service. And this means that lonely people, deprived of the possibility of self-care, do not remain hungry, dirty, defenseless.

Our mission is to support a decent standard of living for the elderly. And we invite you, friends, to join our mission. Thank you to all sponsors, partners, volunteers, employees, donors and caring people who help us in charity work!
