• Alexander Kalyagin: sparkling sense of humor and grotesque in the club of Hesed

Recently in the Hesed club was held a regular meeting from the cycle "Theatre of juking from Emil Krupnik". This time the meeting was dedicated to the life and work of Alexander Kalyagin, the outstanding actor of theatre and cinema.

For 74 years of his bright and eventful life Kalyagin played countless characters on stage and screen. Among them — the iconic "aunt from Brazil", not less a cult ones - Gogol's Chichikov, and Chekhov's Platonov, the fabulist Aesop and cunning fellow San Sanych, Mr. Pivnik and the Gestapo man Meigel...

He was born in 1942, in the family of the Dean of the history Department and teacher of French. Mother, Yulia Zaydeman, was 40 years old, and his father died a year after the birth of his son.

Late child, caressed, "excessively loved" by mom and aunts, Sasha from his early age showed a penchant for theater and acting. In order to satisfy the whim of a seven year old theater-goer, the mother hired a carpenter to build a small theater with real wing flats and the stage inside a room in a Moscow communal apartment. The performances were played for neighborhood children where beads became a snake, a perfume bottle was a fairy-tale Palace, and the paper men quickly scurried the scene.

13-year-old Sasha dared to write a letter to Raikin – naive, with grammatical errors. A great artist answered the unknown boy: "Sasha, I believe in diligence. What is diligence? Diligence is the foundation of everything for me..."

Kalyagin graduated from the Shchukin theatre institute, and began his theater career at Taganka with Lyubimov, continued in the Yermolova theatre, in the "Sovremennik" and in the Moscow art Theater. His first significant role was Poprishin from Gogol's "Diary of a Madman". The best theatrical roles of Kalyagin are Trigorin in Chekhov's "The Seagull", Orgon in Moliere’s "Tartuffe", Fedya Protasov in Tolstoy's "The Living Corpse".

In 1992 Kalyagin created his own theatre "Et Cetera", which he runs today.

In the cinema actor has starred at Nikita Mikhalkov – the role of Platonov in "An Unfinished Piece for a Player Piano" based on Chekhov has won him international acclaim: the film was awarded the main prize of the International festival in San Sebastian (Spain) and leading man starring was awarded the best actor at International festival in Colombia.

Hesed wards who came to the meeting, as always, warmly welcomed the story about the actor and the episodes of the old favorite films. Special brisk was caused by the scenes from the film "Hello, I’m your aunt!" with gorgeous inimitable grotesque acting: Kalyagin from Brazil, where live lots of wild monkeys, Dzhigarkhanyan in pajamas suit, an old soldier Kozakov with a broken heart, the ever-sober and unruffled Gaft - this movie will never get old and will always be pleasing to any viewer with a sense of humor.
